We are looking for a Development Editor to develop high-quality content for books for both national and international markets. You will support the Commissioning Editor in developing initial book concepts/structures, and then take full responsibility for developing these concepts with the authors, up until handover of manuscripts to the editorial team.

This role provides an opportunity to fully engage with and influence the content and to input in to the look and feel of the book. Collaboration with in-house sales and marketing, production and design teams, as well as agents, is vital in ensuring that the publishing meets the needs of the key audience and stakeholders.

Job Responsibilities :

- Support the Commissioning Editor in developing the manuscript received from authors

- Brief authors clearly and in line with the approved concept, work with and support author/author's team for the duration of the writing period to ensure that content is written to the brief and submitted on time

- Work thoroughly and with detail on the manuscript to ensure suitability of content, approach, language level and cultural sensitivity

- Brief and manage freelance development editors, where necessary, and oversee work to ensure quality control

- Liaise with the editorial team after handover to facilitate smooth production of manuscripts - including reviewing and resolving copyedit queries, inputting on photo and artwork selection, and providing feedback on proofs

- Liaise with marketing and sales teams on promotional material/information as required

Experience, skills and qualifications :

- Educated to degree level or equivalent

- Demonstrable, hands-on experience of developing and editing manuscripts (both fiction and non-fiction) within a publishing environment

- Excellent command of the English language with attention to detail, quality control and an ability to engage with content on a detailed level

- Ability to communicate constructive criticism sensitively and confidently to authors

- Ability to own and manage multiple, multi-level projects simultaneously to tight deadlines

- A working knowledge of editorial and design costs in publishing

- Awareness of publishing processes, how they impact manuscript development, and time and cost implications of editorial decisions
